Today we are going to look at different types of medical entrance exams (one by one) to which you can appear to make your career in the medical field.

We will also give a closer look at the exam pattern for each of the exam and try to find out the dates for this year.

The education in which the knowledge related to the practice of being a medical practitioner is provided is medical education.

If you ask students that “what they want to become in life?”, then among the most common answers one answer is “I want to become a doctor!” . You can also be one of them.

Every student wishes to make his career in the medical field in India as well as out of India and thus the medical field is one of the most famous career options after class 12th.

Some facts about the medical entrance exams that you should know:

  • Every year more than 13 lakh aspirants appear for medical entrance exams to become a doctor.
  • To pursue medical education in India, students need to appear for different entrance exams.
  • For MBBS and BDS courses, there are no different state level exams organized because from the year 2017, all the state level MBBS/BDS entrance tests have been merged into one common NEET examination.
  • NEET , NEET-PG , and NEET MDS are the entrance examinations that are conducted for admission to medical and dental courses across India, as per the Indian Medical Council Act-1956.
  • AIIMS , New Delhi , JIPMER , Puducherry , PGIMER Chandigarh can conduct their own entrance examinations for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses as these are institutes of National importance.

UG Medical Entrance Examination

Only those candidates will be eligible for appearing in the UG medical entrance test, who have completed their class 12th with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as the main subjects.

Let us check the list of undergraduate medical exams and their details below:

1. National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET)

  • For admission to medical as well as dental government, deemed and private universities or colleges across India, this is the only entrance examination .
  • National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) has scrapped All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) and all individual state level medical entrance exams, as per the order of Supreme Court of India in May 2016.
  • It is an offline medical entrance exam.
  • The exam contains 180 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) from Physics, Chemistry and Biology concepts studied in Class 11th and 12th.

Important Notes:

  • For All India Quota seats filled by Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), 15% of the total seats are reserved .
  • On the basis of NEET scores obtained by aspirants, the remaining 85% state quota seats will be filled by respective state counseling authorities.
  • From the year 2019, the NEET exam will be conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA).
  • On 5 May 2019 , the NEET exam will be held in pen and paper mode (offline mode) in a single session.

2. All India Institute of Medical Sciences Entrance Exam (AIIMS MBBS)

  • For admission to undergraduate medical courses in all AIIMS institutes across India, AIIMS MBBS is one of the most eminent exams among the 3 national level entrance examinations.
  • It is the most competitive medical entrance exam with more than 3 lakh medical students applying every year.
  • In 9 AIIMS institutes located at Jodhpur, Nagpur, Patna, Raipur, New Delhi, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Guntur, and Rishikesh through AIIMS MBBS a total of 800 seats will be offered.
  • This exam is an online exam containing 200 objective type questions from Chemistry, Biology, Physics, General Knowledge and Aptitude & Logical Reasoning.

Important Notes:

  • Students who secure the minimum qualifying AIIMS MBBS cut off will be included in the merit list.
  • The process of allotment of seats is on the basis of merit list and it will be done based on the seats available, the preferences of colleges, as well as courses, filled, and rank secured.
  • AIIMS MBBS 2019 exam will be conducted on 25th and 26th May 2019 by AIIMS New Delhi.

3. Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research Exam (JIPMER MBBS)

  • JIPMER, Puducherry conducts this national level medical entrance exam once in a year.
  • For this online entrance exam, more than 1.50 lakh aspirants apply every year.
  • JIPMER MBBS is a computer-based exam with 200 objective type questions (MCQs and reason assertive) asked from Biology, Physics, Chemistry, English Language & Comprehension, and Logical and Quantitative Reasoning.
  • The questions asked in this MBBS exam will be based on the syllabus as prescribed by the CBSE and State board of Class 11 and 12.

Important Notes:

  • Only the candidates securing minimum qualifying percentile will pass this medical entrance exam.
  • Students will be called for the counseling process based on the rank which they have obtained.
  • The allotment of seats will be done based on the rank, seats available and choices filled.
  • JIPMER MBBS 2019 exam will be conducted on 6th June 2019 .

Postgraduate Medical Entrance Examination

Postgraduate courses like MD/MS , DNB , MDS can be studied by the students who wish to pursue specialization in a particular branch of medicine after completing an undergraduate course of medicine for 6 years including 1 year of internship.

Students need to appear and qualify the following medical entrance exams, for pursuing post graduation in the medical field.

National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test for Postgraduate

  • If you wish to pursue Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Masters of Surgery (MS) then this is the only entrance examination.
  • For admission to all government, private, deemed and central universities/colleges across India, the National Board of Examinations (NBE) conducts the NEET PG exam.
  • Only NEET PG will be conducted for admission to MD/MS courses and All India Postgraduate Medical Entrance Examination (AIPGMEE) has been scrapped.
  • NEET PG exam will be conducted.

Important Notes:

  • The Counseling process will be done for the candidates who secure qualifying percentile in the exam.
  • To prepare a merit list, the state authorities use the scores obtained in NEET PG.
  • Based on the State merit list and as per the candidate’s rank, preferences, domicile, and seats available, the candidates will be called for the counseling process.

National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET MDS)

  • For admission to Masters of Dental Surgery courses, this exam is considered as the only entrance exam.
  • For admission to 50% All India Quota seats & State Quota seats offered by private, government, deemed and central universities/colleges across India, candidates who have completed their BDS degrees with 12 months of a rotatory internship will be eligible to apply for NEET MDS.

  • To participate for the counseling process, aspirants securing the minimum qualifying marks will be considered eligible.
  • For NEET counseling conducted by MCC , candidates included in 50% All India Quota scheme can participate.
  • Based on NEET MDS scores, the remaining 50% state quota seats will be granted by designated state counseling authorities.

All India Institute of Medical Sciences Postgraduate Entrance Test (AIIMS PG)

  • For admission to MD/MS courses, this is one of the prestigious medical entrance examinations.
  • AIIMS PG is conducted twice a year in January and July session by AIIMS, New Delhi.
  • Admission is offered to around 499 MD/MS seats in 6 AIIMS institutes located at Jodhpur, Raipur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, and Rishikesh, apart from New Delhi by this medical entrance exam.

  • To qualify the test, the cut-off set by AIIMS, New Delhi must be secured by medical PG aspirants.

  • According to a student’s merit rank, they will be called for the counseling process.
  • The seat will be allotted only on the basis of choices of courses and colleges filled and seats available.

Jawaharlal Institute of PG Medical Education & Research (JIPMER PG)

  • This exam is one of the three major entrance exams in the country.
  • To appear for JIPMER PG, candidates must have completed their MBBS from a recognized medical institute along with 12 months internship.
  • This exam is conducted twice in a year , in January and July sessions.
  • This exam is conducted in an online mode .
  • By applying to this medical exam, candidates can apply to 200 MD/MS courses.

Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER)

  • This is one of the most competitive exams in India.
  • This exam is also conducted twice in a year, in January and July sessions.
  • PGIMER, also like AIIMS, JIPMER can conduct its own entrance examination.
  • It is an offline exam with 250 questions.

PGIMER PG Exam Pattern

Foreign Medical Graduate Screening Exam (FMGE)

  • This exam allows medical graduates to get a permanent or provisional certificate from Medical Council of India.
  • This exam is also conducted twice in a year, in January and July sessions.
  • This exam is conducted twice a year , in the month of December and June every year by National Board of Examination (NBE).
  • The exam is divided in two parts and it contains 300 marks.

FMGE Exam Pattern

Diplomate of National Board CET (DNB CET)

  • This is a National level entrance exam.
  • NBE regulates this exam every year in two sessions.
  • By appearing to this exam candidates can take admission to D.M./M.Ch. or DNB (3 years super speciality) courses.
  • Every year in the month of December, it is organized.

So, this was the brief about different national level entrance exams in India. Thus, you must be well prepared to appear for any kind of entrance exams.

You must have clear understanding and basic knowledge of all the subjects including Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Apart from these subjects you must be good enough in subjects like Logical and Quantitative reasoning, English language and comprehension etc. as in some exams there may be questions asked on these sections.
