Many students grow up with a dream of becoming a doctor!
In India, there are both types of colleges, government and private, which offer various courses in medicine. To get a seat in any of the medical colleges in India, NEET is mandatory.
The National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) is the test that decides whether the candidate is eligible or not for MBBS and BDS programmes in Indian medical and dental colleges.
Now, the question which must be peeping in your mind is -
As these marks are the deciding factor that will decide where you will get admission, in a government medical college or in a private medical college.
Most of the medical aspirants like you wish to study in Government medical colleges as they are cheaper than private medical colleges.
But in government medical colleges, there is a very tough competition as the seats are limited in these colleges. Private medical colleges, on the other hand, charge huge amounts of fees, upto several lakhs per year!
Wherever you go, the first and foremost thing needed is clearing the NEET exam. So, let us find out what are the minimum marks or minimum rank required in NEET for MBBS in Government colleges in 2021.
In India, approximately 80,000 seats are available in medical colleges out of which 42,568 seats are from 280 government colleges and the rest are from private medical colleges and deemed universities.
Students who wish to take admission in government medical colleges have to face strenuous competition ahead.
All the government medical colleges available in India, divide the total number of seats into two quotas:
So, 15% of government college seats are reserved for all India quota, while the rest 85% of the seats are reserved for state students.
These 85% of state quota MBBS seats in government colleges are further divided among students as per their categories. There are total 4 categories of students:
The minimum marks required in NEET for MBBS in government medical colleges for each category varies and they are given in the table below:
Do you want to calculate your NEET percentile? There are a few methods in which NEET calculates your percentile. As far as the score is concerned you can directly check for the minimum and maximum marks or the highest rank.
For this calculation, you need to know the score of the topper of the same year and your NEET score
NEET percentile = Your NEET marks/ topper’s NEET marks*100 Suppose you have secured 550 marks and the topper’s marks are 710 then the percentile is calculated as follows:
NEET percentile = 550/710 *100 = 77.4644 %
For the general, that is, open/ unreserved category of students, the cut-off percentile is 50 which means that you need to score approximately 360 or above in order to get admission to MBBS in a government college.
Whereas, on the other hand, for SC/ST/OBC students the cut-off percentile is 40, which means that they need to score at least 288 or above to be able to get admission to MBBS in a government college.
This calculation is based on the number of candidates appearing for NEET in the same year. You need to know this if you want to calculate your percentile based on rank. The percentile in NEET is used to determine students’ rankings.
NEET percentile= [ ( Total number of candidates appeared for NEET – NEET rank ) / Total number of candidates] * 100
For example, suppose if you have got a rank of 24000 and the total number of candidates who appeared in NEET for the same year was 13,66,945, then your NEET percentile is:
For e.g. NEET percentile based on total no. of candidates appeared = ( ( 13,66,940 – 24000 ) / 13,66,940 ) * 100 = 98.2%
Hence, this proves that an open category student should hold a rank above 6,83,473 to be eligible for admission in government college for MBBS.
Whereas, on the other hand, an OBC/ ST/ SC student should secure a rank above 8,20,167 to be eligible for admission into a government college for MBBS.
It also depends on the number of students applying for the college apart from the cut-off rank, the ones with the best rank will be selected.
