Mumbai colleges are set to roll out 4-year undergraduate programmes following the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 guidelines. But, as revolutionary as it sounds, institutional enthusiasm sometimes graduates later than the students.

Why?

Classrooms could be empty in the first intake. Because if we look at the internal surveys, only 5-10% of eligible third-year students are thinking of an extra year. The poll was conducted by autonomous colleges affiliated with Mumbai University

The goal of these 4-year UG courses is to make the career pathway easier and provide an honours or research-based degree.

But persuasion is needed more than proclamation here. Students are discourages to go for these courses. The reasons:

  • limited awareness
  • uncertain job benefits
  • popularity of 3-year UG + 2-year treditional PG structure

Why Students Are Hesitant About the Fourth Year UG Programme

Reasons for Low Student Interest

  • Limited awareness: NEP 2020 four-year degree structure is selectively heard, resulting in low persuasion.
  • Uncertainty in job market: Employers recognise the old 3+2 structure
  • Higher costs: additional academic year will cost an extra fee
  • Preferences: 3-year UG+2-year PG path is followed and taught

This structure will mainly appeal to those who are research-oriented or belong to the science stream.

How the NEP Four-Year Undergraduate Programme Works

Autonomous colleges can offer a four-year UG programme, if we look at the NEP 2020 directives. The degree awarded after this would have an honours or research component.

Features of the NEP four-year UG degree

  • Students with CGPA 7.5 or above can opt.
  • The additional year has:
    • Research projects
    • Honours specialization
  • Students can pursue a 1-year PG. They do not have to take the traditional 2-year PG course.

The overall duration is similar. But NEP model integrates research and specialisation in the new structure.

Science Students More Likely to Choose the Fourth Year

Active reception has been received by science students at Ramnarain Ruia College.

According to Dr. Anushree Lokur, the Principal says,

“Students in BSc who are certain about pursuing postgraduate studies are more likely to opt for the fourth year.”

Meanwhile, students who plan for a professional course are more hesitant. HR College under HSNC University reported that MBA students want to gain work experience first, so they are reluctant for an extra year.

Colleges Prepare for Launch Despite Low Interest

Colleges are set to start the fourth year, despite the lukewarm student response. Colleges are taking several measures:

  • New curricula design
  • Student awareness sessions
  • Lateral entry admission provisions

What This Means for Mumbai Students

The disinclination of students for 4-year undergraduate programmes can not result in the withdrawals altogether. Colleges accept that they will see limited participation as they are ready to start them from June 2026.

But in the future, the market will recognise this structure that can result in increased adoption. But it will happen gradually.  Until then, most students in Mumbai appear comfortable with the traditional three-year UG degree route.
