NEET 2026 Registrations Increase, MBBS Seats Expected to Rise in India

The Times of India has reported that in 2026, the overall number of registrations for NEET 2026 has been increased by 3000 candidates compared to that in the last year. It increases the expectation of a big jump in the number of MBBS seats also in 2026. Recently, the National Testing Agency (NTA) issued admit cards for 22,79, 743 candidates. 

As per the report of the Times of India, in 2025, around 22.76 lakh NEET registrations took place all over India, while the availability of seats was around 1.29 lakhs. This year, the existing Indian medical colleges proposed to the NMC to increase MBBS seats.

According to a source in the National Medical Commission (NMC), the number of total MBBS seats in India, which is expected to increase, is likely to be announced in the coming days. But, it is expected that most likely the number of MBBS seats in India will be increased this year, which will reduce the competition stress of the candidates. 

This year, NTA has emphasised reducing the mental stress of the candidates by allocating the seats to their first-choice exam cities. While registering, the candidates were asked to put three entries of exam cities as per their preferences. The NTA officials have confirmed that more than 99% of the candidates have been allocated their cities in their first-choice cities. Therefore, they are expecting an increase in attendance on the day of the exam. 

As the exam day is approaching, the NTA officials are looking forward to coming up with a better exam experience for the candidates.
