How to Upgrade Your Seat in Uttar Pradesh Medical Counselling

As of now, the UP NEET 2025 Counselling dates are not officially announced yet, because the NEET 2025 exam just happened on 4th of May, 2025 in pen and paper mode. Over 20 Lakhs students showed up, sweating the bullets in exam halls, across the country. Now, we all are waiting.

Once the result is declared DGME Uttar Pradesh will announce the counseling dates and schedule along with the official brochure and that is where the real game begins.

We will dive into that also but first you should note that the UP NEET Counselling is only for 85% state quota. The remaining All India Quota is handled by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC). Upgrading your seat in Uttar Pradesh Medical Counselling is a part art and part science. Meaning of Upgrading Your Seat in the UP Medical Counselling

A lot of people still do not get this part, what actually is an upgradation.

It is basically saying that I will take this seat but if you (DGME) have something better in upcoming rounds, count me in. It is like scrolling through better profiles. It may seem like a harsh analogy but accurate and up-to-date.  Here, you do not lose anything but if you do not act smartly, you probably will.

Stages of UP NEET Upgradation 2025

Step 1- Read the official NEET Brochure

We know no one want to get through that 50 pages government PDF but that document is a gem, it tells you the rules, clearly and plainly like

• What counts as “better” in your choices.
• What happens if you do not upgrade?
• When to report to college?
• What to carry?
• What fee to pay?

Save it and probably bookmark it. 

Step 2- Lock your choices carefully

When Round 2 opens up, DGME asks you to fill and lock your choices again. And seriously this is your only chance to solve your Round 1 regrets. Rank your true preference honestly. However there is a twist, if you do not lock your preferences, your previous seat might get snatched, you can actually lose it.

Step 3- Understand the Float vs Freeze Dilemma

This part might feel annoying and confusing. In UP NEET Counselling, if you are assigned a new seat, you will see an option to Freeze and Float. Freeze means you will take this seat, it is a done deal whereas Float means you are still hoping for a better seat in upcoming rounds.

Here is the risky part. UP NEET Counselling generally has only 2 main Rounds and then a Mop Up Round. So if you are choosing the Float, then float at your own risk because Mop Up Round is fresh registration which means you might lose everything if you lose this seat. So if the new seat is Round 2 is satisfactory- just freeze. 

Step 4- Pay the Fee on Time

It sounds obvious but many students take it for granted and lose their seats. Do not wait for the last date, the payment getaway might crash, the server can get down and you will be left with no extension.

Security Money for UP NEET 2023 Counselling 

Candidates have to pay a refundable security deposit after completing the registration process. This security money will be paid via a Demand Draft in favor of “Director General, Medical Education & Training, U.P”. The security money varies for the candidates who want to participate in private or government colleges. The amount of security money also depends on medical and dental courses.

Step 5- Document Verification

After your seat gets upgraded you must report to the college physically with your documents, originals and copies.

• NEET admit card 2025
• NEET rank card 2025
• Class 10th and 12th mark sheet
• A valid photo Id proof (Aadhaar card/ Passport/ Driving License/ Pan Card)
• Domicile Certificate of Uttar Pradesh
• Caste Certificate
• Online registration slip
• Receipt depicting the successful deposition of security money

No Going Back after Upgrade

Candidates must note the rule that if they get a new seat in the next round, the seat allotted in the last round will no longer be available, and you will lose it. The seat you lost will lastly be available for other candidates on the merit list. So you must strategize and plan mindfully before opting for seat upgradation because medical counselling in UP is not easy. Websites crash, dates change, heart races but do not panic.
