Types of NEET cutoffs

While you might be thinking about the ranks and cutoffs you need for your dream college, it’s also important to understand how cutoffs work. In simple words, a cutoff is the minimum score you need to get to secure a seat in a medical college. Every college has a different cutoff, which can vary based on the course and its popularity. The more reputable the college, the higher the cutoff. Government colleges usually have higher cutoffs because more students apply for them.

There are mainly two types of cutoffs you should know about:

  1. Qualifying cutoff
  2. Admission Cutoff

Let’s read about the different categories of cutoffs in detail.

Qualifying Cutoff

The qualifying cutoff is the minimum required to pass the NEET examination, it acts like an eligibility benchmark. Candidates who do not meet this score are not considered qualified and cannot participate in the counselling process. In such cases, the exam must be attempted again in the next session.

The cutoff scores differ for each category, such as General, OBC, SC/ST, and PwD. These scores are set by the National Testing Agency (NTA), the body that conducts the NEET exam.

Each year, NTA mentions the qualifying cutoff on the NEET scorecard. Here are the category-wise qualifying cutoffs for MBBS admission:

  • General (UR) category - 50% (160/720)
  • General (PH) category - 45% (143/720)
  • SC/ST/OBC - 40% (125/720)

Admission Cutoff

The NEET Admission cutoff is the minimum marks the candidates need to get admission in any particular college, and different colleges have different cutoffs marks for admission. It depends on the availability of seats, the number of students applying, and the college's reputation. There are various factors, like the number of seats available, how many students apply, and how well-known the college is, determine the admission cutoff.

  • Admission cutoff is different for All India Quota and State Quota. The cutoff for State Quota students is generally less than that of AIQ candidates.
  • The admission cutoff mostly depends on the reputation of the college. More reputed colleges get more applications, and hence the cutoff increases.
  • Government Medical colleges have higher cutoffs as they are much more affordable than the private colleges. Hence, more students apply and the cutoff increases.
