Learning about the Seat Matrix

1. What is the Punjab Seat Matrix?

Seat matrix is a formal distribution of medical postgraduate seats in government and private medical colleges in Punjab. Before counselling, BFUHS releases college-wise and category-wise seats distribution. This matrix will help you in filling the choices and planning the strategy, depending on the availability of seats in each college and in each specialization.

2. State vs Privately owned medical colleges

  • The government colleges in Punjab provide more or less 641 MD/MS seats as well as 109 MDS seats under the state quota (50%).
  • The number of 348 PG seats provided by private/ deemed colleges are also available under state quota counselling for 50 restriction of state quota admission.
  • The other available positions in the government and privates are offered through All India Quota (AIQ) under MCC.

3. Who Provides Counselling?

The counselling in Punjab NEET PG is done by BFUHS (Baba Farid University of Health Sciences) in Faridkot. All the process of application, uploading merit lists, filling of choices, and seat allotment is done through their official portal.

4. Eligibility & Cut-off

  • Possess a recognized MBBS degree and completed internship by March 31, 2025.
  • Registered with NMC/MCI or relevant state council.
  • Meet NEET PG cut-off percentiles: 50th percentile for General, 45th for PwD General, 40th for SC/ST/OBC.
  • No upper age limit, and Punjab domicile certificate is required to claim state quota seats.

5. Counselling Process & Timeline

The counselling spans multiple rounds:

  • Round 1 & Round 2: Seat allotment based on merit, followed by document verification and reporting.
  • Mop-up / Round 3: To fill surrendered seats.
  • Stray Vacancy Round: Final opportunity to grab leftover seats late in the cycle.

Tentative timeline based on 2025 schedule:

  • Round 1 results: Early Dec 2025
  • Round 2: Mid‑late Dec 2025
  • Mop‑up: Late Jan 2026
  • Stray Vacancy: Feb–Mar 2026

6. Fees & Security Deposits

  • Application fee: ₹5,900 (General/OBC), ₹2,950 (SC/ST)
  • Choice-filling security deposit: ₹25,000 (₹12,500 for SC/BC) for government seats; a higher ₹2 lakh deposit required for private/deemed seats.

7. Strategy Tips

  • Always review the college-wise seat breakdown before ranking your preferences.
  • For state quota, diploma vs MD/MS, fee structure, and specialty popularity matter—double-check with last year's matrix or official PDFs.
  • Keep choices flexible: use fallback options if you cross-cut specialties.
  • For private/deemed seats, be aware of much higher tuition fees and bond clauses.
  • Track merit list cut-offs that BFUHS publishes each round—you can skip lower-preferred options to upgrade strategically.
