The news affects those JEE Main candidates in West Bengal who were to sit for the test on 23 January 2026. Candidates from other states will appear according to the original schedule. The revised exam date, city intimation slip, and updated admit card will be published soon on the official website.
Why Was the JEE Main Jan 23 Exam Postponed?
In a notification shared on X, NTA said that it had decided to reschedule the exam. But only for candidates appearing in West Bengal. The reason is Saraswati Puja, celebrated in West Bengal on 23 January. It will clash with the exam date.

NTA stated:
βIn view of the representations received from candidates in the state of West Bengal regarding the celebration of Saraswati Puja on 23rd January 2026, it has been decided that all candidates scheduled to appear for JEE (Main) in West Bengal on 23rd January 2026 shall be allotted another date of examination.β
Political Voices and Student-Related Concerns
A few days ago, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar had written to the JEE Secretary and requested to revise the date. The cited reason was Saraswati Puja and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Jayanti.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) also raised objections. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also said that students celebrate Saraswati Puja on January 23. This statement confirms her intervention.
