Understanding seat upgradation in NEET Counselling 2026

Applicants are allotted seats in NEET counselling depending on different factors, including their NEET All India Ranks, online option entities, categories, and marks. Medical seats throughout prestigious colleges are usually filled by the top marks in the NEET exam. The seats allotted to applicants depend on the order of names appearing on the merit list. Understanding how to upgrade seats in NEET Counselling 2026 boosts the confidence of applicants and assists them in making informed decisions. Candidates must note that no physical reporting to the allotted college is needed to claim or save an upgrade of their seats for NEET 2026 Counselling.

●  Opt for Seat Upgradation: If a student is not satisfied with the allotted medical seat, they may select “Willingness to Upgrade” to upgrade their seat. They must follow similar methods of applying and choice filling to attend the subsequent counselling round.

● Choice Filling: While registering for the subsequent rounds, students will be given some time to fill in their preferences. This step is called online option entry or the choice-filling step, one of the most vital steps in NEET counselling. Applicants must enter the course and college names in terms of their choice during the choice-filling step.

● No Going Back after Upgrade: Applicants must know that once they get a new seat in the subsequent round, the seat allotted in the last round will no longer be available. The seat will eventually be available for other students on the merit list. Applicants must strategize and plan well before opting for a seat upgrade.

● Seat Upgradation only Round 3: Applicants must understand that seat upgradation is available only in rounds that are specified by the counselling authority. After the mop-up or stray vacancy rounds, no further upgradation is allowed and seats allotted in these rounds are normally final.

What are the options after seat allotment?

Here are the options for students after they are allotted seats:

● Accept and Report to the Allotted College: Once a seat is allotted in rounds 1 and 2 in NEET counselling 2026, students can choose to accept the allotted seat and also complete the admission formalities within the mentioned timeline. If they are eligible they might also select the seat upgradation option according to the MCC rules.

● Seat Upgradation: If they are unsatisfied with the allotted seats, students must opt for seat upgrades. If they do not have any higher preference seats allotted in the subsequent rounds, then the previously allotted seat will be available to them.

Note: For the mop-up round and the other rounds following it, applicants will not have the option to upgrade seats. Applicants allotted seats in these rounds must complete the admission process and report to their allotted colleges before and after the particular deadline.
