How to Upgrade Your Seat in MCC CounsellingHow to Upgrade Your Seat in MCC Counselling

So the NEET result day is near, the moment every  medical aspirant waits eagerly is coming, the moment when your future flashes in numbers. Imagine it's 14th of June, you check your result. It is decent though not jaw-dropping but enough to secure something good in MCC Round 1.

Shortly, the counselling portal opens, you fill your choice like most students- a mix of dreams, backups and hope. And congrats you did get a seat but it was not your top pick, not your worst either.

So, is it done? No, not yet for sure.

Before diving into the Do’s and Don'ts, let's take a look at what it actually is:

NEET 2025 counselling process

The declaration of NEET UG results are decided on 14th of June according to the National Testing Agency (NTA) and soon after that NEET 2025 counselling process is likely to begin in the end week of July.

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) will be the responsible body for the counselling and it will do so via online mode. Although the last round requires you to be physically present due to the  institute reporting process. The number of rounds varies upon the vacant seats but if we were to look at the standard format , there are 4 to 5 rounds of counselling.

Eligibility for Counselling

And what makes you eligible to participate in the NEET UG 2025 counselling process,

  • National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is a must.
  • Registration on the official website of MCC is necessary.
  • All candidates, including candidates from the UT of J&K, are eligible to participate in the counselling for deemed universities and AIQ seats.

Now, let us focus on the upgradation part.

Round 1: Report; Why you must join first

The big decision awaits you. You have got a seat so what now? You have 2 options,

  1. Accept and Join
  2. Reject and try again

But here is the thing, if you do not join now and report to the allotted college in round 1, you are basically saying goodbye to MCC and you are out. So, you should and must join, report physically, submit the asked documents, sign those papers. But also make sure that you do one important thing, and what is that?

“I am opting for Round 2.”

Now you might ask, what is that one sentence going to do? Well, it will keep your seat secure and gives you a shot to get something better, something higher.

Upgradation: What it actually is

A lot of people still do not get this part, what actually is an upgradation.

It is basically saying that I will take this seat but if you (MCC) have something better in upcoming rounds, count me in. It is like scrolling through better profiles. It may seem like a harsh analogy but accurate and up-to-date.  Here, you do not lose anything but if you do not act smartly, you probably will.

Round  2: The Real Marathon Begins

Now makeup your mind like a war strategist. You will not get more backup options this time, just the colleges you actually want, for which you would leave your current seat for, no questions asked. Because it is the rule that if you are upgraded in the second round, your previous seat is gone, period. No second thoughts, no going back so rearrange your choices, save them, log some of them out and wait.

Result Day: The Great Shift

When round 2 results drop, candidates feel the NEET all over again. So, when you open the portal, you get a seat. Better college this time. And in reality, you feel joy, but it brings urgency too because you can not be loose this time.

What After Upgradation:

Finally, you have upgraded, now it is a tight schedule and you must adhere to it. Make a tight checklist;

  • Get your relieving letter
  • Pick up your original documents.
  • Report to your new college before the deadline.

Because if you lose the deadline, you lose everything, no mercy, nothing.

Things You Should know:

  • Refunds are not always smooth:

Colleges may deduct a bit of your fees for reallocation or processing but amounts vary.

  • No More Upgrades After Round 2

Once you upgrade your seat in Round 2 there is no going back, you can not go for stray vacant rounds or mop-ups. Your counselling is finally done.

  • Take Round 1 Seriously

Do not skip Round 1 because if you do you will not be even eligible for Round 2 upgradation. It can be over, before it starts, in a blink.

Upgrade but Upgrade Smart

If you have made your mind for upgradation, learn these bullets by heart

  • Do not skip Round 1.
  • Make a laconic and focused college list for Round 2
  • Do not give spaces to those colleges you do not want to join.
  • Time is limited, so be very fast when results come.

And the most important part, believe in the process but do not slack off, because time flies.

Is It Worth It? Undoubtedly

The whole process is overwhelming, stressful. You will get a load of ‘what ifs’, rushing, paperwork and silent panic. But the results will make it up, you will feel right when you get your desired seat. A place you are actually looking forward to go.
