What is the NEET Counselling?

NEET Counselling is the admission process for MBBS and BDS programs across medical colleges in India. It is done after the NEET UG result. Candidates get seats based on their rank and choices.

There are approximately 129,026 MBBS seats and 27,868 BDS seats available across India through NEET UG.

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) conducts counselling for 15% All India Quota (AIQ) seats in government medical and dental colleges. It also handles admissions in central universities, deemed universities, ESIC colleges, and other participating institutes.

The remaining 85% of seats are filled through state counselling. Each state conducts its own counselling process for these seats.

Major Changes in MCC NEET UG Counselling 2026

MCC has introduced a revised reporting and document-verification system for 2026. Candidates who receive seats will fall under the Freeze or Float category based on their willingness to seek an upgrade.

Freeze Option

Candidates should select Freeze when they accept the allotted seat and do not want an upgrade. They must physically report to the allotted institution for document verification, fee payment, and final admission.

Float Option

Candidates should select Float when they accept the current seat but want an upgrade in the next round. They must upload their documents for online verification and do not need to visit the allotted institution during the initial upgrade process.

One-Time Document Upload

Both Freeze and Float candidates must upload clear scanned copies of the required documents through the MCC portal. Documents uploaded in Round 1 do not need to be uploaded again in Round 2.

Physical Reporting After Round 3

Physical reporting becomes compulsory after Round 3 for fresh allottees, upgraded candidates, and candidates retaining earlier seats without further upgradation.

Online Resignation Facility

Do not state that every candidate can resign online. MCC distinguishes between the two categories:

  • Float candidates can submit an eligible resignation request online.
  • Freeze candidates may need to report physically to the allotted institution.
  • Candidates cannot resign from a Round 3 allotted seat.

You may also briefly mention digitised NRI verification, improved PwBD facilities, stronger cybersecurity, and an enhanced grievance system. These changes were highlighted in the Indian Express report.
