What are the different MBBS Seats In India? 

There are 700+ medical colleges where students can take admission for MBBS. These colleges have MBBS seats in two different categories:

  • Government Seats: There are 386 government-owned colleges with approximately 55,648 govt MBBS seats in India
  • Private Seats: With 351 private medical colleges in India, there are 53,256 approx seats reserved for MBBS. 
  • Semi-Government: There are 8 semi-government-owned medical colleges with MBBS seats reserved for NEET Candidates.

MBBS Seats Quota 

MBBS Seats in India are categorised based on AIQ(All India Quota) and State-Wise Quota. These are further reserved for students from different socioeconomic backgrounds.  Let us understand different MBBS Quotas

  • AIQ (All India Quota):  The AIQ are the 15% seats reserved by the central government in all government medical colleges. These seats are allocated to top rankers via a merit list by the MCC - Medical Counselling Committee
  • State Wise Quota: The 85% seats are provided to the state quota, which are reserved for students of respective states. Out of these 85% seats, the state government has a certain fixed percentage for reserved category students.

The central government reserves some percentage of seats for students from different backgrounds. These seats are reserved to empower the minorities and offer equal opportunities. Which Authorities are Responsible for MBBS Seat Allotment In India? 

The National Testing Agency (NTA) conduct NEET every year for MBBS and other medical courses admissions. The MBBS Seats across various government institutes and their allotments are done by MCC (Medical Counselling Committee) and the State Education Department. 

  • MCC handles the All India Quota and releases a merit list every year. 
  • The State Education Department handles the state quota reserved for MBBS. They release their own merit list every year.
