In addition to MD/MS and Diploma, Jharkhand offers DNB (Diplomate of National Board) seats in a few private hospitals (all filled through NBE counselling). For 2024, NBEMS lists (for Jharkhand) 2 DNB seats in Pediatrics at Asarfi Hospital and 4 DNB seats in Ophthalmology at Kashyap Memorial Eye Hospital, among others. (These are national quota seats run by the National Board of Examinations.)
Reservation Categories
Jharkhand follows its state reservation rules for state-quota PG seats. Generally about 27% OBC, 15% SC, 7.5% ST, 10% EWS, and the remaining UR (unreserved) share are applied, along with horizontal reservations (e.g. PH). For example, RIMS’s MBBS admissions show separate columns for UR/OBC/SC/ST/EWS, and a similar breakdown applies to MD/MS seats (adjusted to seat counts). In short, seats in each college/course are split among categories (UR/OBC/SC/ST/EWS, etc.) as per Jharkhand policy. (Foreign/NRI or management quotas exist in private colleges, but these are handled separately.)

Seat Allocation Process
Jharkhand medical PG seats are filled by counselling. By NMC rules, 50% of seats are All-India Quota (AIQ) and 50% are State Quota. All-India seats are allotted nationally via MCC counselling, while Jharkhand’s 50% state quota is allotted by the Jharkhand Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (JCECEB). The general process for state-quota (JH NEET PG) is:
- Registration & Choice Filling: Candidates register on the official JCECEB portal and fill preferences for courses/colleges.
- Seat Allotment Rounds: Seats are allotted in successive rounds (typically 3 rounds plus any stray-vacancy rounds), based on NEET-PG rank and category.
- Document Verification & Reporting: After each allotment, candidates do document verification and join the allotted college.
The state merit list is category-specific and includes reserved seats. Note that each institute’s seat matrix (published by JCECEB) shows the exact number of seats in each specialization and category. Aspirants should closely follow JCECEB notifications and counselling schedules.
FAQs
Ques: How many PG (MD/MS/Diploma) seats does Jharkhand offer in 2024?
Ans: In the 2024–25 counseling session, Jharkhand had about 157 state-quota PG seats (MD/MS/Diploma combined). Because Jharkhand follows the 50% AIQ policy, this implies roughly 314 total PG seats (157 state + 157 All-India) in that year. Major colleges like RIMS Ranchi (177 seats total) and MGM Jamshedpur (47 seats) account for most of these.
Ques: How are seats divided between the State Quota and AIQ?
Ans: Exactly half of Jharkhand’s PG seats go to All-India Quota (AIQ) and half to State Quota. The AIQ seats are filled through MCC counselling, open nationwide. The state-quota seats (the other 50%) are filled through Jharkhand’s counseling by JCECEB. (For example, if a college has 10 MD seats, 5 go to AIQ and 5 to the state quota.)
Ques: Which Jharkhand colleges offer the most PG seats, and in which specialties?
Ans: The top contributors are RIMS Ranchi and MGM Jamshedpur. RIMS (Ranchi) offers 111 MD/MS seats and 66 Diploma seats in fields from Medicine and Surgery to Anatomy, Pediatrics, etc. MGM (Jamshedpur) offers 22 MD and 17 MS seats (plus 8 Diplomates) in subjects like Anatomy, Anesthesiology, OBGYN, etc. Other institutes with PG seats include CIP Ranchi (34 MD Psychiatry) and RINPAS Ranchi (1 MD Psych + 1 Diploma Psych). New government colleges in Hazaribag or Palamu may add seats soon (await official updates).
Ques: How are reservation categories applied for PG seats in Jharkhand?
Ans: Jharkhand applies its state reservation policy. Broadly, the state-quota seats are divided into categories (e.g., ~27% OBC, 15% SC, 7.5% ST, 10% EWS, plus the remainder UR). Horizontal reservations (for Persons with Disabilities, etc.) also apply. The official seat matrix for each college lists the exact number of seats per category. In general, seats are allocated “category-wise” – for instance, some MD seats are earmarked for SC candidates, some for ST, and so on. (All-India seats follow central reservation rules, but the state seat quotas follow Jharkhand norms.)
Ques: Are there DNB or other alternative PG seats in Jharkhand?
Ans: Yes. In addition to MD/MS/Diploma, Jharkhand has a few DNB (Diplomate of National Board) seats at private hospitals. For 2024, NBEMS listed, for example, 2 DNB Pediatrics seats at Asarfi Hospital, Jharkhand, and 4 DNB Ophthalmology seats at Kashyap Memorial Eye Hospital, Jharkhand. These DNB seats are filled by separate (all-India) counselling by the National Board of Examinations. (MBBS graduates can also look at central institutes: e.g., AIIMS Deoghar offers 7 MD/MS seats, all through AIQ counselling.)
