NMC Updates MBBS & BDS Seat Matrix50 seats have been reduced, NMC cites a slip-up.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has revised the seat matrix for MBBS and BDS admissions, bringing the total number of medical seats in India to 1,28,875.
The updated data corrects typos and shows a deduction of 50 seats from the earlier count of 1,28,925. The action tends to ensure an accurate seat matrix for upcoming NEET UG admissions.
A few weeks ago, over 9,000 MBBS seats were added as NMC updated the seat matrix.
What’s New in the Revised Seat Matrix?
As per the NMC, some data discrepancies were discovered during the renewal process of medical colleges. The new revision is the aftermath. The commission also clarified that 456 seats were removed due to technical issues.
So what is the total number?
- Total seats (2025-26): 1,28,875
- Earlier count: 1,28,925
- New seats added: 11,350 (including AIIMS seats and JIPMER seats)
- Reduction: 50 seats after correction
- Colleges covered: 819 MBBS colleges in India
Reason Behind the Revision
The NMC explained that the changes were made to resolve printing errors.
The rectification mainly focuses on:
- Swaminarayan Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Gujarat
- Viraat Ramayan Institute of Medical Sciences (New establishment)
“The revised number reflects removal of 456 seats due to typographical errors in institutional records,” the NMC stated.

Update on NEET UG 2025 Counselling
The Department of Medical Education and Training (DME), Uttar Pradesh, has postponed the Round 3 UP NEET UG 2025 seat allotment results. The decision is the result of MCC directions. Uttar Pradesh NEET UG counselling 2025 is in its final phase, but the results are awaited till the further notice.
NEET UG Stray Round Schedule
NEET UG counselling stray vacancy round is for those who did not get a seat in previous rounds of NEET UG counselling 2025.
- Registration begins: November 4
- Tentative seat matrix publication: November 4
The NMC also said that a candidate’s failure to join an allotted seat during this round will lead to:
- A one-year bar from the next NEET UG exam.
- Forfeiture of counselling fees.
NMC’s Notice for Super Speciality Students
Postgraduate super speciality students are advised to verify their details on the NMC website. In case of the missing or mismatched data, students need to contact their state Directorate of Medical Education or counselling authority for correction. The notice was mentioned in a separate guideline by NMC.
