Tamil Nadu is set to add 460 fresh postgraduate (PG) medical seats in 13 government medical colleges from the 2026-27 academic year. To corroborate this move, the State has issued Essentiality Certificates and has empowered the DMER (Director of Medical Education and Research) to get an approval from NMC. The recent development tends to provide better access to medical training opportunities to NEET PG students with an increase in Tamil Nadu NEET PG seat matrix.

Recently, NEET PG 2025 Seat Matrix was revised as 103 seats were withdrawn from Round 1.

KCSSH To Get More Seats in Super Specialty Streams

Kalaignar Centenary Super Speciality Hospital (KCSSH), which is attached to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, will get 28 new seats. KCSSH currently has 38 PG seats.

These PG seat additions are in these 7 specialties:

  • Nephrology
  • Urology
  • Medical Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Gastroenterology
  • Cardiology
  • Anaesthesiology
  • Radiology


Tamil Nadu Doctors Raise Concerns

Government Omandurar Medical College and Tamil Nadu Government Multi Super Speciality Hospital (Omandurar Estate) is not in the proposed for seats expansions which has caused unrest among doctors. The doctors said that the expansion plan should have been made according to the patient load. A few doctors have also pointed out that increasing PG seats is being used to replace junior and senior resident posts.


Related Update on NEET UG Counselling

On 8 November 2026, MCC added one MBBS seat from Government Kilpauk Medical College to the NEET UG 2025 Stray Vacancy Round.

This seat was previously withheld because of a Madras High Court directive. Now it has been released under the All India Quota (AIQ) for the OBC-PwD category. Eligible OBC-PwD candidates can now apply and compete for this seat in the Tamil Nadu Counselling Stray Vacancy Round counselling.


Private Colleges Push for Higher PG Intake in Tamil Nadu

More than a dozen of self-financing medical colleges in Tamil Nadu plan to add between 50 and 150 MBBS seats each in the Tamil Nadu NEET PG Counselling 2025 Round 2. Several esteemed publications reported that Four deemed universities in Tamil Nadu may add approximately 100 MBBS seats each. The total additional NEET PG seats expected in Tamil Nadu for 2025 is about 1,750.

Due to the review by NMC, the MCC was instructed to pause admissions temporarily. The same pattern was seen in TN NEET PG counselling as the delay was due to SC hearing and the awaited seat matrix of NEET PG. Following the seat revision, 73 new PG medical seats were approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC) for Tamil Nadu in 2025.
