NMC Approves 247 New PG Medical Seats in Gujarat

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has given the nod to 247 new PG medical seats in Gujarat for the academic year 2025-26. The addition has been made in 14 medical colleges in Gujarat. The number of new seats is far below the state’s request for nearly 800 seats. The update was reported by English Gujarat Samachar.

As the state authority is set to allot seats in the upcoming Gujarat NEET PG Counselling matrix, aspirants should be aware of contemporary developments. The addition brings down the total to 3,719 seats in the Gujarat NEET PG Seat Matrix.

NMC Clears 247 Seats: What’s Confirmed?

As the state counselling is still in the pipeline, this increase is set to bring certain benefits to various stakeholders. The move tends to put forward specialised doctor training, but still faces a large gap between the requested and sanctioned seats.

The Gujarat government and GMERS colleges had requested approval for around 800 new NEET PG seats collectively.

Distribution of Newly Approved Seats

As per English Gujarat Samachar, 14 government and semi-government colleges have received 247 seats.

GMERS Colleges: 173 Seats Approved

Eight GMERS colleges get 173 seats. The requested number was about 420.

Government Medical Colleges: Under 100 Seats Approved

They sought approval for 400 seats but got only around 100. Six major government medical colleges:

Impact on Gujarat NEET PG 2025 Counselling

As clarified Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) by he state quota matrix will include the sanctioned increase directly. They explained that counselling authorities do not need to wait for the Letter of Permission (LOP).

The seat approval list will be published on the NMC website, and it will be treated as valid. This ensures aspirants can access these seats immediately when the allotment rounds kick off.

State Government Files Appeals

Due to the drastic mismatch between the requested and approved numbers, the Gujarat Health Department directed all deans to file appeals before the NMC.
Paying ₹50,000 per subject, colleges have already submitted appeals.

The state will now present these details before the NMC to corroborate the need of asked seats:

In October, the central government approved over 11,000 new PG seats across India for 2025-26. Gujarat received more than 250 new seats.

Counselling Schedule Faces Delays

The precariousness of postgraduate medical admissions in Gujarat is due to the All-India Quota (AIQ) choice filling delay, and this has not occurred for the first time.

State quota admission was planned on 19-27 November.
But it can not begin until MCC NEET PG AIQ Round 1 Counselling is completed.
3,100 PG (estimate) seats are available every year in Gujarat. It has government and self-financed institutes included.
Round 1 merit list was published on 29 October 2025, with revisions on 1 November and 4 November 2025.
The revised seats have created confusion for aspirants.

New Seat Conversion Rules Issued

On 14 November, the Health and Family Welfare Department, Gandhinagar, made changes in a few rules and issued a revised admission framework.

Big Changes

Reserved: UR seat conversion will now happen only in Round 3.
A new conversion algorithm sets the order in which seats will shift.
NRI seats to Management Quota (MQ).
Unfilled MQ seats in Round 3 to Government Quota (GQ).

This is the first time Gujarat has implemented the NRI - MQ - GQ conversion model.
