How Medical Colleges and Seats Get Approved

The institute, who wishes for an increase, sends an application seeking approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC). NMC then reviews it:

  • Setting up new medical colleges
  • Increasing MBBS seats
  • Expanding PG medical seats

Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) takes assessment.

Evaluation methods:

  • Verification of digital documents
  • Aadhaar-based attendance records
  • Hospital Management Information System (HMIS) data
  • Photographs and video feeds
  • Video conferencing inspections
  • Surprise physical inspections

Once the evaluation is done, the NMC issue:

  • Letter of Permission (LoP) – Approval granted

or

  • Letter of Disapproval (LoD) – Application rejected

India’s Doctor–Population Ratio Improves

According to the Union Health Minister JP Nadda, India’s doctor-to-population ratio is 1:811. The estimation is based on the assumption that active practitioners are 80%.

Current numbers:

  • 13,88,185 registered allopathic doctors
  • 7,51,768 AYUSH practitioners

The expansion will help in the overall improvement of India’s healthcare arena.

Why This Matters for Medical Aspirants

The approval of 11,682 MBBS seats and 43 new medical colleges will bring better opportunities for NEET aspirants.

More seats mean:

  • Higher chances of medical admission
  • Expansion of medical education infrastructure
  • Better doctor availability
  • Health benefit in rural areas

Other seat increases are also expected further in the coming years.
