Government Approves 11,682 MBBS Seats and 43 New Medical CollegesThe Union government has approved 11,682 MBBS seats and 8,967 postgraduate medical seats. This development will apply for the academic year 2025-26. 43 new medical colleges will be established. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare shared these numbers in the Rajya Sabha.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has provided this data. The seat increase will take place in:
- medical colleges
- institutions such as AIIMS
- other Institutes of National Importance (INIs)

How Medical Colleges and Seats Get Approved
The institute, who wishes for an increase, sends an application seeking approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC). NMC then reviews it:
- Setting up new medical colleges
- Increasing MBBS seats
- Expanding PG medical seats
Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) takes assessment.
Evaluation methods:
- Verification of digital documents
- Aadhaar-based attendance records
- Hospital Management Information System (HMIS) data
- Photographs and video feeds
- Video conferencing inspections
- Surprise physical inspections
Once the evaluation is done, the NMC issue:
- Letter of Permission (LoP) – Approval granted
or
- Letter of Disapproval (LoD) – Application rejected
Government Scheme to Expand Medical Colleges
The government is also running a scheme for medical colleges establishment. They will be attached to existing district and referral hospitals. Underserved and aspirational districts are the targets.

According to the Union Health Minister JP Nadda, India’s doctor-to-population ratio is 1:811. The estimation is based on the assumption that active practitioners are 80%.
Current numbers:
- 13,88,185 registered allopathic doctors
- 7,51,768 AYUSH practitioners
